We belong to the most amazing homeschool group in our tri-state area. Last year, this extraordinary group of moms came up with a yearlong Olympics program and to top that this year, it's a science program. Each month brings different topics we'll all learn about together.
The first Wonder of Science program took us to a nearby farm to learn about living sustainably. I was a little bored. Ho-hum, been there, do that. But it's nice to make connections with like-minded people and hang out with our friends!
The group made individual Wonder of Science t-shirts to wear to our events. We missed the science Blast Off! program where everyone decorated shirts so I studied everyone else's while at the farm so I could steal ideas, which I'm very good at anyway in blogworld. Hayes wanted to dress like a Catholic school girl. That's my friend Brenda with her back to us. Doesn't she have the best hair?!
A picture of the rainwater collection system. This feeds into an inground cistern where it can be pumped out. Our rainwater collection "system" is just three 50-gallon barrels under the downspouts.
During lunch, all the kids played Shark and Minnows and a mom commented you would not see a group like that at "real school." Older ones playing with younger ones, boys and girls playing together. True.
And I was really proud of Hayes because some kid told Chooj he couldn't play Sharks and Minnows so, according to Hayes, Chooj sat down right in the middle of the play area and "looked like a storm." She got him and announced,"You can play, Chooj." And that was that.
Yesterday we decorated our Wonder of Science t-shirts. The homeschool program is "awarding" stars for each program attended and extra science projects completed. Hayes and Chooj both have two so far.
Here is our tour leader standing among a small grove of paw paw trees. So jealous he has paw paws!
The second part of the program was all about composting, specifically worm composting. I really thought I was going to have bad dreams after seeing this.
At home, Hayes found two monarch butterfly caterpillars and they went into our butterfly habitat. Unfortunately, we accidently killed them. Rats.
