Spellbound is our 31 year old off-track Thoroughbred. Cursory research showed she won almost $380,000 at the track in the early '80s and is from the same line as Private Gold. All Thoroughbreds have a tattoo on their upper lip to determine their pedigree, race record and such, but Spell's is so smeared with age that we don't know any more about her.
She ended up at the Horse Rescue, Relief and Retirement Fund, Inc. in Georgia and our friend Anne adopted her. When we were moving to our Tennessee farm, Anne and the HRRRF agreed to let us take her.
So the poor thing lets me occasionally jump on her and she walks around, heads into the run-in shed trying to get me off her back.
It's unusual for a horse to be this age and she's in great shape, but we're still trying to prepare ourselves for the day she leaves us. Until then, lots of loving!
