Outdoor Nature Hour: mold & mushrooms

Really, the children are interested in these things. It's not just me! I just happened to discover some of these while we were out gawking at our creek, which is now a river.
I had the nerve to pick this one, which is really quite slimy feeling. The kids touched it and agreed.

As part of this week's challenge, Hayes and I modified the mold experiment in Anna Comstock's "Handbook of Nature Study." We took two potatoes - one we handled all over after touching everything in the house that we all touch everyday, like the fridge handle, toilet handle, door handle, horse feed scoop, and we put that into a jar marked "Dirty Hands Potato." The other we handled after washing our hands well and that jar is labeled "Clean Hands Potato." Both jars are lurking next to a heater vent and we will explore what happens to both during the next few weeks and give you our report.
