Outdoor Nature Hour: winter tree observation

Hayes knew which tree would be our year-long observation: the climbing tree in the pasture.
She said this was very easy to draw since there aren't any leaves on the tree.
The horses like to stand under this one in summer. Some of their mane hairs are on the underside from where they rub.

Yesterday, since it was about 50 degrees out, we walked our property to see how much damage the ice and snow did to our trees. We fared well. No trees down and probably fewer than 10 big limbs broken. There are lots of small limbs to be removed that goes on the list of jobs for kids.

We were amazed at the huge ice chunks that have heaved from the thawing and freezing. These have to be about six inches thick! Our creek is rushing from the melting ice and snow and that's nice to hear. It's funny to think Hayes and I walked on the frozen creek just a couple of weeks ago.

So are you just starting your tree study? I can't remember. It should be fun for your kids to follow the tree all through the next year.

Those are some really big chunks of ice! Glad you had some nicer weather to go out and have your Outdoor Hour.
