Weekly wrapup: a productive week!

We are continuing our study of ancient history reading about Egypt, pyramids and pharoahs in the Usborne Time Traveller series. I then made up this timeline from some blog post I stumbled across and Hayes had a great time placing dates on it. So much fun that she wanted to add more. Not yet, not yet!

I also got these books off Amazon's used sellers: the "I Love Math" series. Using the backyard nature one, Hayes read about temperature and then we did a worksheet comparing average habitat temperatures. I can't wait to use more of these books. They look so great and ... she doesn't even know she's learning about math.
For Earth Day, Hayes did some worksheets from Enchanted Learning then we headed outside to do our Outdoor Nature Hour, learning about violets, bluebells, chasing butterflies and keeping tabs on our bluebird pair.

There were lots of equine-related activities this week too: a riding lesson Monday learning how to trot over ground poles, a symposium at the University of Kentucky with leading Thoroughbred horse trainers and an equine dentist demonstration at 4-H. Hayes received the wolf tooth the dentist pulled from the mare there.
I also found some free Montessori cards from Chasing Cheerios. Some were pretty easy for Hayes but still a learning opportunity about the food pyramid and seasonal clothing matchups.
Chooj did his animal family cards then gave it up to try this plastic banana.

We rounded out the week by having Skunk Haven come talk to us about skunks. The kids learned about the colorings and behaviors of both wild and domestic skunks, that the fur trade resulted in domesticating skunks for pets and then the kids got to touch three different skunks to feel how their coats differed.

Hayes won a prize for answering that the owl is a predator of the skunk.

Chooj petted the skunks but refused to have his picture with one.

Here I am with Skunk Haven director Deb Cipriani. I so want a pet skunk!

What a fun hands-on week!

My girls seen a show about skunks as pets. They wanted one for awhile. I'm glad that phase passed. I think our little farm would be rather stinky. I'm sure our Saint Bernard would make a skunk spray. LOL!

Oh, that's cool about the skunks. I've always heard that they make great pets once they're de-scented. Maybe you can confirm that first-hand some day. ;-)
