Here is an update on our chickens: they are stupid.
Several weeks ago, we plunked down a chunk of change to get five hens and a rooster. Cool. We kept them three days in the coop Alex built from this old truck camper shell then let them out in the yard. Well, they took off. I don't know how, with seven acres, chickens find it necessary to forage on someone else's property, but they did. Several of the hens would sneak back during the day to lay and then off again and all would come home to roost in the evenings.
Until one night ... a troublesome white hen led the group across the road and up the neighbor's hill. Two hens returned and that's been it. (I heard flushing of money down the toilet.)
So we had to go up the road to our neighbors... a-gain ... and bought some baby chicks. Alex figures the babies can be trained to stay home.
I configured a chicken tractor and Hayes and I carry all 13 chickens back and forth between the coop and the chicken tractor. This is a major feat for me because I am SKEERED of birds but I think I'm getting over it.
We had some really, really nice weather last week and so Chooj pulled off all his clothes and took off running through the wild carrots.
