Outdoor Nature Hour: squirrel study

Our creek is completely frozen over with a light dusting of snow on it, which makes looking for tracks really easy! Hayes found rabbit tracks for last week's study and in doing so, we also found squirrel tracks.

Today we found more so we were able to read about squirrels (sa-lo-lee in Cherokee) from the Handbook of Nature Study while the kids colored pictures of squirrels. Hayes enjoyed the diary of Fury/Furry from the HNS.
I followed that up with a Walt Disney book about a squirrel "Perri." This book is dated 1957 and belonged to my mother and aunts. I used to love reading it when I'd go to my grandmother's! It says it's based on a Disney movie of the same name, but I've never seen it.

We also found bird and raccoon tracks

while Hayes and Chooj "ice skated" on the creek. Chooj was intentionally sliding and falling lest you think I was taking a picture of my son's misfortune!

Rabbit and squirrel tracks...I'm jealous. Just kidding. I am so glad that you are finding the focus for the mammal study. Thanks so much for sharing your photos because I think it will help other families know what to look for when they go out.

Also, thanks for the link to your uncle's blog...wow! Great photos over there. I wish I had a big ole telescope and that I knew how to use it to see all those amazing things up in the sky.

Thanks again,
Barb-Harmony Art Mom
