In case of an emergency, water is vital. You can live longer without food than water. Tenzicut at Down to the Roots, who came up with this list, suggests 2 gallons a person per day for drinking and sanitizing.
When we lived in Tennessee for most of the time without running water, I can tell you that we can make water stretch because we know what a precious resource it is. We bathed, washed hands and cooked out of gallon water jugs that we filled at neighbors' houses or at the nearby park.
We have a large creek flowing behind our house so I'd like to have a store of water purification tablets on hand. I'll be ordering some from Emergency Essentials.
