Weekly homeschool wrapup

Our week isn't over as we're all reminded that learning never stops! We're participating in the Great Backyard Birdcount this weekend, which presents lots of learning opportunities, but first ...
Monday we drove an hour to a nature center to see an exhibit on beavers and the place was CLOSED. At least there was a nice play area so the kids got their ya-yas out before getting back in the car to have another hour drive home.

Tuesday Hayes continued her Typing with Timon and Pumba computer program and is now at 90 percent accuracy. Well done! Before that, we explored our neighbor's rock wall fence and all the nooks and crannies and moss that goes along with that.

We learned this week that these "smushy" mushrooms growing on trees are called wood ears and they are edible. Um, this falls into that category of I don't know how hungry I would have to be to eat one.

Wednesday we went to the library and there was a tornado warning so we talked about what the sky looks like in a tornado and that kind of thing. Earlier the kids were exploring the creek while I was inside having breakfast. They fell in, Hayes said she saved Chooj, and came in soaked. The creek was high and rushing so I immediately said thank you prayers and we talked about how to manage yourself in rushing water: go feet first downstream and swim diagonally toward shore. But first, we agreed that no one is to go down to the creek without an adult when it is high and rushing like that. Both children have been through Infant Swimming Resource lessons and know how to self-rescue and are also very respectful of water. Still, precaution is the order of the day, we all agree upon it.
Hayes and Alex ended the evening by playing chess.

Thursday we headed back to the nature center an hour away to do our Outdoor Nature Hour study on beavers and muskrats. It was rather disappointing but feeding the ducks afterwards was a bunch of fun!

Hayes practiced her Crocodile Hunter aspirations by getting this duck to jump for its bread.

We finished our beaver/muskrat study when we came home and also Hayes finished the valentines for the homeschool party on Friday. She reviewed her multiplication tables and we talked about time - half hour and quarter hours. Hayes then "taught" Chooj how to play chess.

Today was our first ever homeschool valentine's party. We had a bunch of fun and the kids were good and sugared up - woo whee for me!
Hayes finished up her 50 State Friday by learning about South Carolina and Arizona. She wants to learn about the desert so I have a lapbook prepared for that for next week and Arizona was just a preview.

What a great week. Sorry it started out rough with the closed exhibit. That's happened to us before, frustrating.

That stinks to drive an hour away twice and still be disappointed. Oh, well. At least you had fun feeding the ducks. My kids always enjoy that, too.

Can't wait to read about the Backyard Bird Count!

Hello, I'm visiting from Kris's site.
Too bad you drove so far to only have it closed, then to go back and it not be what you expected. At least you had the ducks!

I am interested in the Typing with Timon and Pumba. They are a couple of my dd's favorites.
