If you encounter this plant, you'll never forget it. I hit it weeks ago while weedwacking and thought I'd been stung by something. Alex ran into it while running fence and came out of the bushes slapping his legs and saying he'd run into fire ants or something. I said,"It was stinging nettle."
My friend Bernadette actually bought some for her herb garden and found out why it's STINGing nettle. She said people used to plant it outside their windows to keep away peeping Toms. Now that is a wonder!
We ran into stinging nettle again a couple of days ago and gave it a good look. But now I know how to handle it - counterpressure until you find some dock to crush and put on it.
My herb books say it is a wonderful nutritious plant, especially cut and dried for horses for winter.
I plan to plant some outside the windows ... and I should plant some where the White Trash is sure to run into it!
