Weekly homeschool wrapup

Our homeschooling "week" started off pretty crummy. Our big mare, Lisa, died unexpectedly early Saturday morning. She was about 28. Hayes helped Alex hook up Lisa to pull her out of the pasture and then there was an impromptu homeschooling lesson on death. "Why is her body doing this?" "Why is her body doing that?"
Soooo ... then there was the Great Backyard Birdcount, which Hayes has sort of continued on her own ever since. I think we had 68 total birds counted during a three day period.
Monday was our first sick day out of our 113 official school days. Hayes had some kind of stomach flu germ so she sat on the couch and watched TV all day.
Tuesday we learned about deserts because Hayes wanted to.
Wednesday Hayes finished the desert lapbook and diorama she started the day before. She did her "Typing with Timon and Pumbaa" typing lesson and achieved 100 percent so she gets to move on to using more fingers! We worked on math by measuring stuff to make chocolate chip cookies.
Thursday we did our Outdoor Nature Hour Challenge on bats and Hayes did a few worksheets on fractions. She found about three fossils in the creek. But the biggest excitment of all was getting hair cut. Hayes had about six inches chopped off her's:

and Chooj had his first ever hair cut. Now he looks like a boy:

Friday Hayes learned about Texas and Alaska as part of her 50 State Friday. She told me she learned in 1992 a 9,000 year old skeleton was found in Texas in 1992 and that it stays light for 20 hours a day during Alaska summers. We find interesting factoids about states from "Go, Go America" and "Treasure Hunt Across America." Then Hayes makes a quarter rubbing from the collector map. I had her put together a puzzle of the states she's learned so far with our U.S. puzzle map.

Alex's parents arrived and so Hayes showed off her multiplication review of 0s, 1s and 2s for Grandpa on the homeschool chalkboard wall.
She also saved scrap fabric from a quilt and made a new dress for her Cherokee doll:

Tomorrow is Hayes' 8th birthday and we are having a party at the racetrack. Nothing like introducing children to gambling at a young age!

I'm sorry to hear about your mare. I know that had to have been a sad day for you all. I have to admit, though, my weird, unsocialized homeschoolerishness finds some comfort in your dd being able to learn about some of the physical aspects of death in a natural way, if that makes any sense at all.

I had to LOL at teaching your kids about gambling at a young age. ;-) And, I think it's totally cool about finding the fossils in the creek.

Wow! 68 birds. That's fantastic.

I found the Typing with Timon and Pumba but unfortunately we have Vista and we don't think it will work. :-(

I love the Cherokee doll! Did she make it herself too?

Happy 8th birthday Hayes.

Oh dear, I'm so sorry about your horse, how tragic. That must be hard, especially having her for so long. But it looks like the rest of your week went well and kids handled it well.

It sounds like it was an interesting week...from death to the hair cuts! Great pictures of both of the kids, too! Happy Birthday, Missy Hayes! Love, Aunt Melinda

Thanks for stopping by. Penny Candy came with my son's Sonlight curriculum. You can buy it straight through them but they have used copies on Amazon.
