Last night, sadly, our old Percheron mare Lisa died. She was about 28.
We adopted Lisa from the Horse Rescue Relief and Retirement Fund in Georgia. Her previous owners had given her up because they didn't want to work on her feet - the size of dinner plates. Everyone wanted her because she was so big and gorgeous and we were lucky to get her.
I tried riding her but she would just throw her head, obviously no one had ridden her. One of our pasture mate owners harnessed her up and ground drove her so she had been a cart horse at some point. For us, she was just to love.
We let Hayes sit on her a lot while Lisa ate and leisurely strolled around the yard and she was the first horse Chooj sat on after he was born.
As big as she was, Lisa let everyone boss her around and was the low ranking horse in the herd. We loved her all the more for this because she was so placid.
All in all, Big Lisa was Alex's horse. She could really care less that I was around unless I was feeding her. She adored Alex!
We will miss that big ol' girl greatly. She leaves a huge hole in our hearts.

So sorry to hear about your loss. Our animals become part of the family, don't they? So glad you have so many wonderful memories of her.
I was so sad to hear about Lisa. I have to smile when I think about how many fences she dismantled at the rescue. She was such a big gentle giant. Thank you for giving her such a wonderful life.
Miss you guys!
nickers,
Julia
We were so sorry to read about Big Lisa. I get tears in my eyes thinking about it. I know she'll be missed, but what a wonderful end of life you gave her!
