Frozen frog

Did you know that some frogs hibernate by freezing themselves in water for the winter? Neither did I! While we were out doing our homeschooling work along the creek yesterday and Hayes took time to throw rocks to see how thick the sheets of ice were on the creek, I just happened to look down and spotted this frog. It was completely frozen!

So we had to come inside to find out what kind of frog it is (a green frog) and the hibernating habits of such. We were next to what Hayes calls "Spring Peeper Island" and read that peepers hibernate under tree bark. Of course, Hayes wanted to go back out, climb the island and check all the trees for peepers.
Instead, she and I walked halfway down our creek scoping out what will be a good swimming hole come summer.
